Shady Records, Aftermath Entertainment, and Interscope Records released it on January 17, 2020. Like his last studio album Kamikaze, it was released without a prior notification (2018). Eminem and Dr. Dre were two of the producers of the album.
Skylar Grey, Young M.A, Royce da 5’9″, White Gold, Ed Sheeran, the late Juice WRLD, Black Thought, Q-Tip, Denaun, Anderson.Paak, Don Toliver, Kxng Crooked, and Joell Ortiz all make cameo appearances on the album.
Alfred Hitchcock and Jeff Alexander’s 1958 spoken word album Alfred Hitchcock Presents Music to Be Murdered By served as inspiration for the album’s title, cover art, and whole concept. “Darkness” and “Godzilla,” two singles, served as the album’s promotional push.
Alongside the album’s surprise release, Eminem also released the music video for “Darkness”, which revolves around the 2017 Las Vegas shooting from the point of view of the perpetrator Stephen Paddock alternating with Eminem’s own.
The album sold 279,000 album-equivalent units in its first week and peaked at number one on the Billboard 200. Eminem later became one of six artists with at least ten US number-one albums and the first musician to have ten straight weeks at the top of the charts in the US.
Music To Be Murdered Music By ranked first in 16 different nations. In contrast to criticism of the album’s predictable song structure, lack of invention, and shock factor, music critics commended Eminem’s lyrical skills and the improved production after Kamikaze.
Without warning, Eminem dropped Music to Be Murdered By – Side B, a deluxe edition of the album, on December 18, 2020. It includes 16 additional songs in addition to the 20 from the original album.
Numerous features are included, and Skylar Grey, DJ Premier, Ty Dolla $ign, Dr. Dre, Sly Pyper, MAJ, and White Gold make cameo appearances.
