Biography 

Ella Mai was born on November 3, 1994, in London, England, United Kingdom. She has Irish ancestry on her mother’s side and Jamaican ancestry on her father’s side. 

Ella claims that her mother named her after the renowned jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald since her mother enjoyed iconic jazz music. 

When Ella was 12 years old, her family relocated from London to Queens, New York City, after her mother obtained a new teaching position in Queens.

As Mai grew up in her new city, she was teased because of her British accent, making her transition to adulthood challenging.

 Before enrolling at the British and Irish Modern Music Institute in London to study creative musicianship, Ella Mai graduated from The Queens High School of Teaching, Bellerose. 

She became a member of the church choir and began auditioning for school productions while she was a student.

After relocating to New York City, she became interested in athletics and began playing soccer for the school team and a club for nearly nine years. 

Later, she had the opportunity to sing the national anthem during her high school graduation, which inspired her to return to her passion for music.

Career

Ella Mai began her music career in 2014 after enrolling in college (BIMM London). In the same year, she founded the trio Arize and competed in the eleventh season of the British reality music competition The X Factor. However, her group was unable to get past the preliminary auditions, and the band disbanded shortly thereafter.

In 2015, Ella debuted as a solo artist with the publication of her four-track EP Troubled on SoundCloud. DJ Mustard discovered her via her Instagram releases and decided to sign her to his record label, 10 Summers. Her EP attracted a large audience, and DJ Mustard signed her to his label. 

She released her six-track first EP titled Time in early 2016, with the single She Doesn’t, featuring Ty Dolla Sign. Change, her second EP, was published in November 2016, and Ready, her third EP, in February 2017.

DJ Mustard produced her extended play Ready, which became a big commercial success and a critical darling by reaching number three on the US R&B chart. 

Additionally, the EP featured the smash tune Boo’d Up, which within a few months of its release went widespread on social media and at nightclubs. 

The song’s official music video has received over 490 million views on YouTube. After the success of her EPs, she toured with American singer Kehlani on her SweetSexySavage World Tour.

In October 2018, Ella Mai released her debut studio album, self-titled, which debuted in the top five on the Billboard 200, number one on the US R&B chart, and number four on the US R&B/Hip-Hop chart. 

The album contained the single “Boo’d Up,” which hit number one on the US R & B, US R & B/Hip-Hop Airplay, and US Adult R & B charts. Trip, the album’s second song, reached number one on the US R&B and US R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay charts.

In addition, the song “Boo’d Up” received two Grammy Award nominations for Song of the Year and Best R&B Song. Later, Ella was nominated for the 2019 Brit Award for British Breakthrough Act. In 2018, she received three Soul Train Music Awards.
