Biography
The history of female artists in Nigeria cannot be considered complete without mentioning Niniola Apata.
Niniola, as she is affectionately known (born December 15, 1986), is a vocalist, singer, composer, and stage performer.
Her ability was recognized at the 2013 MTN Project Fame Music Season 6 competition.
She finished as the third runner-up in the renowned competition, performing alongside Limpopo master Kcee.
Early Years
Niniola is from the western area of Nigeria, specifically the state of Ekiti. She is Christian and of Yoruba descent.
She is the daughter of Simon Apata, a former brigadier general who was slain when she was eight years old.
Her younger sister is the well-known Nigerian musician Teni, whose full name is Teniola Apata.
Her father had three spouses and raised a large family.
Even though the Apatas were a vast family, they were connected. Niniola’s father is a music enthusiast who plays records every day at home.
Her mother first opposed her decision to become a musician but eventually came to accept it.
Education
Apata Memorial School is a military boarding school in Ekiti State that was founded by Niniola’s father, Simon Apata.
She completed a four-year bachelor’s degree program in education at the University of Lagos.
Career
Niniola’s passion for music dates back to her high school years. She plays for free in front of her students, who are her audience. She was so talented that she led the school’s cultural musical group in competitions against other schools and states.
Niniola continued to pursue her passion for music after college, which led to her participation in the sixth season of MTN Project Fame in 2013. Her performance was not recognized, as she placed third in the tournament.
Her first single, Ibadi, produced by Sarz and released in March 2014, became one of the most requested and listened to songs in Nigeria and Africa at large. She continued to produce hits. Gbowode was one such individual.
Soke, Start Over, Shaba, J’ete, and Jigi-Jigi, not to mention Maradona and Sicker, were also successful singles.
Niniola has collaborated with Ugandan Eddy Kenzo on his smash song “Mbilo Mbilo” as part of her worldwide debut. In 2016, this feature won them the AFRIMA award for best collaboration.
On November 1, 2017, after keeping fans in great suspense, the Nigerian singer launched her debut album, This is Me, with 13 tunes. The record came with an “Artist of the Month” award from Apple Music.
Her popularity prompted her to embark on a South African music tour, and she was instantly booked to sing at the February 2018 South Africa Music Carnival.
The renowned African DJ Snake couldn’t get enough of Niniola’s tune Maradona, which prompted her to create a remix named Maradona Riddim on July 22, 2018.

Aside from that, she was nominated for Africa’s Choice Awards (next rated 2015), Screen Awards (best female artist 2015), the Nigerian Oscar (most promising artist of the year 2015), Ghana Naija ShowBiz Awards (best female acts 2018), and a host of other nominations.
